Restorations

Amplifiers Plus offers a full restoration service to vintage tube amplifiers that have suffered from years of neglect. We specialize in vintage Fender and Marshall restoration, using as many original parts and coverings as currently available.

We recently completed a complete cosmetic and electronic restoration to a late 1961 Fender Bassman, model 6G6, with 8 ohm output, and an early 1963 cabinet. The amplifier had been recovered in the 1970s with thick black vinyl, and had had nothing but tubes replaced since new. The 2 x 12” cabinet had been sprayed black over the original rough white Tolex, the baffle board had multiple hole and repairs under the original grille cloth, and the speakers had been replaced. The black paint had been stripped, leaving a very white Tolex, and residue on the grille cloth. Very unprofessional!

After consultation with the customer, it was decided to make the pair match cosmetically. He loves the rough white/oxblood combination, so we stripped both cabinets, recovered in Fender rough white Tolex, and aged both cabinets to reflect an age of 44 years. The speaker baffle was changed to proper thickness birch plywood, and regrilled with matching oxblood grille cloth. Existing hardware was assessed and cleaned up, and damaged hardware was replaced with Fender original replacement parts.

Electronically, the amplifier was brought up to spec with new replacement capacitors and resistors where necessary. A full clean up was performed, and the completed amplifier and cabinet looked and sounded wonderful.

We have photos available to view our outstanding work. References are available.

All amplifier restoration is labour intensive, and 2 or more quotes can be completed to show varying degrees of restoration. You may wish to only have an amplifier’s chassis electronically and cosmetically restored. A full consultation with our experience and advice will help you to realize a great sounding and looking vintage amplifier.
